Since 2002, the veterinarians and staff at Union Veterinary Clinic have been providing personalized care for small animals. Because we are a family-owned and operated, independent animal hospital, your pet will always receive top-quality medical care with plenty of loving attention.
We are a full-service, small animal veterinary clinic providing comprehensive medical, surgical, and dental care. We also have an in-house pharmacy and laboratory providing a variety of tests, including digital x-ray.
You are, of course, welcome to travel to our clinic, but most of our patients come from the neighborhoods near Union Station, including:
Dr. Gross grew up in Pittsburgh, PA. After graduating from Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, she moved to Washington DC. She completed an internship at Friendship Hospital for Animals. After completing the internship she stayed on as a staff veterinarian there. She worked as a relief veterinarian throughout the DC area after leaving FHA, but has been established as a full-time veterinarian here since 2007. She is our Medical Director at UVC. She lives with her husband Ry, daughter Matilda, son Leo, dog Rooney and cat Sparkles.
Dr. Yim grew up in California and graduated from Louisiana State University – School of Veterinary Medicine in 2011. He worked as a full-time veterinarian in North Carolina for over 5 years before moving to the Washington DC metro area in 2016. He worked as a full-time relief veterinarian for 4 years at various hospitals in Maryland and Washington DC, including here at Union, before he officially joined the team as a full-time associate veterinarian. He holds a special interest in ophthalmology, dentistry, cardiology, and soft-tissue surgery. Before obtaining his veterinary degree, he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences and Dairy Science, and a Master’s degree in agriculture, concentration in micro and molecular biology while at California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo. He enjoys spending time practicing the clarinet and trying to be a home-cook chef.
Dr. Alwiel was born and raised in Fairfax, VA, outside of DC, and started working in animal hospitals at 16 years old. He attended undergraduate studies at the University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!!) and earned his veterinary degree from Midwestern University in Phoenix, AZ. After veterinary school, he returned to the DMV. Special interests include surgery, neurology, orthopedics, and behavior. Experience in small/large animal, wildlife, exotics, and shelter. He approaches patients with a calm demeanor, treating each with the love and attention they deserve.
Dr. Alwiel lives in DC with his partner and two cats, Bumi and Korra. In his free time, he enjoys the outdoors, cooking, gardening, and volunteering through Comfort Zone Camp. He is a budding mycologist and a basketball fanatic (Wizards/Lakers).
Dr. Massre’s roots lie in the sunny town of Cooper City, Florida. He embarked on his academic journey at the University of Florida, where he pursued both his undergraduate degree and veterinary studies, proudly earning the distinction of being a ‘double gator’ upon his graduation. During his time in school, he cultivated a deep fascination for preventive care, as well as internal and emergency medicine.
Outside the world of veterinary medicine, Dr. Massre’s passions include hiking and immersing himself in captivating landscapes, often accompanied by his cherished canine companions, Marshall and Mango. One of his cherished dreams is to explore every national park across the United States.
Dr. Slottje hails from Upstate New York, where she completed both her undergraduate and veterinary degrees at Cornell University. During her studies, she developed a passion for soft tissue surgery and neurology. Now, as a general practitioner, she is thrilled to integrate these specialties with preventative care.
Outside of work, Dr. Slottje enjoys quality time with her fiancé and their grumpy cat, Macy. She loves reading, cooking, traveling, and is eager to explore all that DC has to offer, including becoming the Nationals’ #1 fan.
Max’s journey in veterinary medicine began right here in DC at Palisades Veterinary Clinic, where he started as a customer service representative. Since then, he has taken on a wide range of assistant and administrative roles, always guided by his love for animals and dedication to exceptional client care.
Beyond the clinic, Max has devoted nearly a decade to volunteering at the Smithsonian National Zoo’s elephant house, further deepening his connection to animal care.
When he isn’t leading the team at Union Vet, you can often find Max hiking alongside his Hound-mix, Troy — a loyal adventure buddy always ready for the next trail.

Maddox patrolled the halls of UVC from 2014 until the summer of 2025. Known for sneaking food, shredding toilet paper, and chasing ankles, he will always hold a special place in our hearts.
In his memory, donations to the Julie Fund help pets and clients with limited resources receive discounted or no-charge exams, treatments, and medications.
The Julie Fund is a memorial tribute to the former owner of Union Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Giles passed away on February 11, 2009 due to complications from multiple sclerosis. She possessed a deep love for all animals and the practice of veterinary medicine.
Julie had a special place in her heart for kittens and cats, and she spread that affection, influencing many others to feel the same.
Monetary gifts donated to the Julie Fund will be used to help clients and pets with limited resources. These animals will receive discounted or no-charge examinations, treatments, and/or medications.
The Julie Fund is a registered 501(C)(3) through the Veterinary Care Foundation. All donations are tax-deductible. You can mail a check (payable to “Union Veterinary Clinic” with “Julie Fund” on the memo line) to the address at the bottom of this page or call us to donate using a credit or debit card.
We thank you for your support and know that Julie would be so happy to see the assistance we can offer to animals in need.
